FriendsYouKnow.com Launches New Home on the Web for LGBT and Allied Community

June 9, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally (LGBTA) community will get a new home on the web with FriendsYouKnow.com, a social networking website launching in Beta on June 9 in time for Pride month. Created by and for its users, FriendsYouKnow.com is uniquely tailored to serve the LGBTA community. The site aims to strengthen the community by fostering connections, bolstering information sharing, and giving back financially to the organizations that support LGBTA equality.

“I am thrilled to be launching FriendsYouKnow.com,” said Matt Small, founder and CEO of the start-up. “Up until now, LGBT people and allies have only had ‘one-size-fits-all’ online networking options that were primarily focused on straight users. And sites specifically designed for gay and lesbian users have been largely limited to online dating services. Together, we are creating a space where diverse LGBT people, allies, and families and friends can network personally and professionally with the security of a paid-registration site. I can’t wait to see the FriendsYouKnow.com network grow.”

“One of our main goals with FriendsYouKnow.com is to become a large national funder to LGBTA organizations,” Small continued. “FriendsYouKnow.com will donate10% of subscription fees to groups that serve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and allied people across the country.”

The site will seamlessly bundle all of the best interactive Web 2.0 features, such as linked-in networking, streaming news content feeds, user-generated blogs, and photo sharing to offer an easy-to-use, all-encompassing and welcoming online home.

“People in the LGBTA community have always been early adopters in using the Internet to build connections and share news and information,” said Cathy Renna, communications strategist and a partner in FriendsYouKnow.com. “This site represents a new way for our community to approach the Internet as a social networking space and foster community organizing and funding mechanisms for the organizations that work every day to secure equal treatment for all. I look forward to having my family and friends as members—and networking with everyone who joins us.”
